At the 2020 ADI Forum, Mark Herrmann, VP, Commercial Operations, NRG Energy, and Eric Carlos, Senior Executive Advisor, SoEnergy International, joined moderator Uday Turaga, CEO, ADI Analytics on the power panel. They discussed how the current power market presented a transformed landscape for oil and gas. With numerous coal plant retirements and significant renewable energy build-out, the system had been fundamentally reshocked. This shift positioned natural gas units, due to their affordability and abundance, as the new baseload power providers. Furthermore, the intermittency of renewables created a substantial need for quick-start gas power, which played a larger role in firming up the electricity supply.
These changes created clear opportunities for the oil and gas sector. As gas became integral to both baseload and flexible power generation, producers could capitalize on increased demand. The need for rapid-response gas facilities to complement intermittent renewable sources also opened avenues for investment in or collaboration with renewable energy companies and utilities.
